Investor KITAS vs Work KITAS: Choosing the Right Indonesia Immigration Route
Updated 02 Aug 2026. This article is educational and does not replace a project-specific review of current rules, classifications and authority practice.

Start with what the person will actually do

Immigration planning should reflect the individual’s real role in Indonesia. An investor, director, commissioner, technical employee and business visitor can have different purposes of stay and work, so the route should not be selected only from a job title or preference for a particular permit name.

Align immigration with the Indonesian entity

The sponsoring entity, corporate position, shareholding and manpower setup should be reviewed together. This is particularly important for a newly established PT PMA because the company structure, licences and intended activities can affect the wider immigration and employment workstream.

Do not separate the visa from work compliance

A stay permit and the right to perform work should not be treated as the same question. Where foreign-worker requirements apply, manpower planning, position details, company obligations and recurring reporting should be coordinated with immigration rather than added after arrival.

Plan the route around the project timeline

Foreign executives and technical staff are often needed at specific milestones such as incorporation, equipment installation or commissioning. Mapping each person’s role, start date and duration early helps sequence the immigration workstream with the broader business or factory launch plan.

How IndoGateway approaches this

Start with the operating objective, then map the dependencies.

We connect corporate, licensing, product, site, workforce and recurring compliance workstreams around what the business actually plans to do.
